Backtagging: Yes, to a point. I have memory damage problems IRL, and the longer a thread sits untagged the more likely it is I'll forget it's there. I keep notes on everything I do but the notes don't make up for a lot sometimes. A steady thread is constantly refreshed and thus I can backtag to eternity. But if it's been a couple weeks without a post, please send me a PM or Plurk or IM first so I can try to catch up and figure out what was going on.
